The Clink Prison was established in 1144 making it one of the first prisons in England and gives its name to the well known phrase 'put in the Clink'. It was owned and controlled by the Bishop of Winchester Henry Blois, who was the brother of King Stephen and the grandson of William the Conqueror. It was originally located within the Bishop's Palace walls. Over the years it has held a variety of prisoners such as debtors, heretics, thieves, drunks, harlots, Catholics involved with the Gunpowder Plot, Pilgrim Fathers etc. The Bishop of Winchester was responsible for law and order for a stretch of about 80 acres from Tower Bridge west along the South Bank of the Thames. The Clink Prison endured until 1780, when it was burnt down during the anti-Catholic 'Gordon'riots.
Tower Bridge was built in 1894 to facilitate improving traffic movements across the Thames. Your ticket will include access to the High Level walkways, North and South Towers and atmospheric Victorian engine rooms. Our ticket includes a free audio guide. A lift can be used to access walkways and towers.
We will be traveling by bus from Peacehaven to Brighton Station. Everyone needs to meet at Steyning Avenue Bus stop at 07.45am which is adjacent to a free all day car park. Next we take the ThamesLink train to London Bridge Station. Then it's a short walk to the Clink Prison Museum on the west side of London Bridge. Here we'll meet our Tour Guide who will take us round the Museum.
After the Clink Museum we will walk across London Bridge and into the City to eat at a reasonable cost at the Cross Keys, which is an iconic building owned by Wetherspoons. Then we make our way back over London Bridge and walk along the South Bank past HMS Belfast and the London Mayor's building to Tower Bridge.
Party limited to about 12 people. Please be aware that a fair amount of walking is involved in this outing.
